Netiquette
Netiquette is a combination of 'net' (from Internet) and 'etiquette'. It represents the importance of proper manners and behaviour online in terms of simple rules for respecting others and displaying common courtesy.
1. Remember the human:
your written words are read by real people. Before you press "send" or "submit", would you be okay if someone else sent you this message?
2. Read before responding:
take some time to read through the information presented properly before asking questions or posting responses. Try and find your own answers first.
3. Respect other people's time ... and privacy:
reading and posting messages takes time. Make sure to get to to the point when communicating. Refrain from getting personal.
4. Make yourself look good:
because you can't be seen by your instructor or other students, be sure to check your message content, spelling, grammar and politeness. Don't get too fancy with colours and formatting.
5. Share expert knowledge:
be willing to share your knowledge as much as others are willing to share with you. Careful not to overshare unrelated information.
6. Mind your emotions:
it's easy to misunderstand communication online. Refrain from angry conversations; respond with kindness or don't respond at all. CAPITALISING words for example means shouting. Refrain from this.
7. Don't abuse your power:
you may have more technology experience than your colleagues but it doesn't mean you take advantage of others. You may also lead discussions so apply politeness.
8. Be forgiving of other people's mistakes:
not everyone has the same amount of online experience so be kind and forgiving about other people's mistakes.
