A Proxy War is an arm conflict between two states or non states actors which act on the instigation or on behalf of other parties that are not directly involved in the hostilities. In the 1980s and early 1990s, Afghanistan was a proxy battleground for the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. The USSR supported the communist revolutionary groups throughout the world while the US attempted to contain communisms expansion to other countries. There role was that the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in 1979 fighting to install the communist government. The US provided support to insurgent groups known as the Mujahideen. The USSR fought costly war for nearly 10 years before withdrawing in 1989 as the Cold War was coming to an end. From 1979 to 1989, Afghanistan became a battleground for Cold War between the US and USSR where US was supporting Afghans who resisted the Soviets.
