This course examines the concepts of intercultural communication, the significance of culture in communication practices and cultural variation in speech acts. Case studies drawn from a wide range of cultures will provide opportunities to examine communication in light of broader cultural and social issues such as stereotyping, cultural expectations and attitudes, and cultural awareness. The course offers opportunities for students to relate what they are studying to their own experience, and throughout the course they will be expected to reflect on differing norms of interaction across their own speech communities and examine how people negotiate intercultural communication in diverse settings, including everyday encounters and the workplace.
