Topics in this course will be aimed to provide hands on training to the students in Teaching Veterinary Clinical Service Complex (TVCC) in the following sections:
• Medicine Section
• Gynecology & Obstetrics Section
• Surgery & Radiology Section
• Diagnostic Laboratory Section
• Ambulatory Section
Medicine Section: expanding on and re-enforcing skills learned in VCP 751Sem: Hospital set up and administration; hospital records, record keeping, analysis and interpretation of data; client communication with emphasis on interaction and uses of local language/dialect/terminology of the diseases. Familiarization with generic and trade names of common drugs used in animals along with routes and techniques of medication administration; physical and systematic examination; critical care/intensive care units; care, feeding and management of sick animals; collection of clinical samples and body fluids for laboratory tests; preparation of and follow-up of case records; diagnosis and treatment of common clinical cases; treatment of casualities and other emergencies; vaccination and other disease control measures.
Gynecology & Obstetrics Section: expanding on and re-enforcing skills learned in VCP 751Sem:
Gynecological and obstetrical clinical practice including: rectal palpation and examination of female genital organs; artificial insemination, diagnosis of pregnancy; diagnosis and treatment of various common diseases of male and female reproductive system of domestic animals; breeding soundness examination of bulls; collection of cervical and vaginal mucus for cytology; familiarization with common drugs and hormones used in reproductive disorders; epidural anaesthesia for gynecological cases; handling and management of cases of ante- and post-partum vaginal and uterine prolapse, retained placenta, obstetrical cases, repeat breeders, dystocia, foetotomy, and caesarian section.
Surgery & Radiology Section: expanding on and re-enforcing skills learned in VCP 751Sem: Introduction to surgical clinical practice including: restraining and positioning for physical and radiographic examinations; lameness exams in horses; use of surgical instruments and equipment; common drugs and medications; and preparation of surgical packs. Diagnostic and surgical treatment including: passing of stomach tube; urethral catheterization; examination of neuromuscular and skeletal functions; antiseptic dressing and bandaging; topography/anatomy of domestic animals and the landmarks for the approach to various surgical sites; thoracocentesis and abdominocentesis; first aid in fractures, dislocations, sprain and strain; and management of wounds, abscess, cysts, tumor, hernia, hemorrhage, burn, necrosis, gangrene, sinus, fistula, etc; exposure to various surgical procedures including dehorning, disbudding, laparotomy, rumenotomy, urethrotomy, castration, vasectomy, ovariohysterectomy, and tail amputation. Completion of clinical case records and their maintenance.
