The main aim of this unit is to provide students with sound animal feed production technology background in specific topics such as assessing nutritive value of feeds (physical characteristics and bio-assays) and, formulating feeds and processing ingredients. Critical issues in nutrient metabolism for ruminants include rumen fermentation, end-products of fermentation, and absorption and utilisation of nutrients in the rumen. Availability of minerals and vitamins for use by both ruminant and non-ruminant animals, and feed additives (antibiotics, probiotics, enzymes, and flavours) are reviewed. Students will also familiarize themselves with different software’s for formulating feeds.
