This unit builds on the student’s previous understanding of applied physiology to achieve an advanced level of application in clinical practice. This is achieved through the linking of complex theoretical concepts to clinical practice through the use of diverse and complex clinical case scenarios. Students will be required to analyse, rationalise and evaluate normal versus abnormal physiology and validate patient management in the light of findings. Generic and specific examples of clinical pathophysiology's are explored at systemic and cellular levels to enable comprehensive patient assessment and effective clinical decision making. The cases used to illustrate the pathophysiological will integrate with the clinical competencies assessed in the clinical component of this unit. The following emergencies will be addressed: respiratory, cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, neurological, gastrointestinal, renal, paediatric, mental health, toxicology, haematological and environmental and pandemics.
