This course introduces the student to the chemical, physical and mechanical properties of materials and the scientific basis for
the use and manipulation of materials used in the dental laboratories. Dental materials are described in terms of classification and
function, composition, physical and biological properties and the optimal conditions for their maintenance. This highly-technical
course is most relevant, as the use of dental materials is important to the dental practitioner and this knowledge will be valuable in
understanding the reasons for using a particular dental restorative material, and the techniques necessary to manipulate it.
Alternatively, a specialist visiting lecturer can convene this course in a two-week intensive time period, during which time, the
Year 1 students concentrate only on this course.
