This unit examines key historical periods and events in Fiji between the nineteenth and twentieth century. Among the key events that will be covered are : Fijian disparities and politics before the arrival of Europeans,the arrival and settlement of Europeans and the challenges posed by them, Fiji’s annexation by Britain,the colonial system of indirect rule (the Fijian Administration) ,introduction of ‘protective’ native policies, land sales and the evolution of the native lands policy, the establishment of the cotton and sugar industries, the Indian indentured labour system and settlement of girmitiyas,the rise of trade unions and political parties, farmers and workers struggles for fair prices and wages/conditions and the campaign for independence and negotiated settlement on the 1970 Constitution.
