This course examines contemporary migration patterns of Pacific Islanders to Pacific Rim countries and beyond, and the
diasporic communities formed therein, through field research with particular emphasis on re-located communities.
It focuses on the status of minority groups and their impact on host communities. The course will further develop
students’ historical research skills and afford them an opportunity to grapple with the challenges of a historian,
seeking historical sources, evaluating them as evidence, drawing conclusions about interrelationships, and
reconstructing the past in order to find explanations. The research moves beyond the Pacific region, covering rapidly developing countries such as China and India.
