Course Description
This course is intended mainly for students majoring in physics. Before enrolling for this course, students are advised to complete the units PHY608 (Modern Physics) and PHY704 (Quantum Mechanics and Atomic Physics). The course deals with various properties of atomic nuclei, nuclear models, nuclear decay processes, nuclear reactions and their applications in science and industry, and nuclear radiation detection techniques. The course also briefly deals with physics of elementary particles and the role they play in understanding of our universe.

Laboratory work in this unit deals with measurement and study of properties of nuclear radiations using the Geiger-Müller and NaI(Tl) scintillation detectors.

This course is a prerequisite for some MSc Courses and Research Projects in Physics that are based on Applications of Nuclear Techniques.
