This unit builds on the basic knowledge of engineering principles in the areas of fluid mechanics and fluid dynamics. It is concerned with the static and dynamic behavior of incompressible fluids. The focus is on the ability to understand and use the mathematical descriptions of fluid systems. This unit also builds on the knowledge of fundamental engineering principles in the area of heat transfer. It covers the physical and theoretical description of the three modes of heat transfer: conduction, convection and radiation and the application of fundamental heat transfer equations to engineering heat flow situations. The thermal design of heat exchangers is covered as a specific practical application of heat transfer theory.
