The Resource Management course addresses two important areas, Personnel Management and other Essential Resources.
Personnel management for any manager in any organization is a major role and a challenge. For nurse managers it is even more challenging with shortage of nurses and migration of skilled nurses. Therefore, the nurse managers are required to be competent to manage their staff.
The Personnel Management Course addresses six important areas, staffing; staff development; staff motivation, behavior and welfare; performance appraisal; prevention and management of self and staff problems and time management. Preventing and managing problems, like stress, conflicts, staff grievances, disciplinary issues and workplace bullying and diversity will be emphasized. With limited staffing and increasing scope of practice it is essential that nurse managers manage their time effectively and guide their staff to manage their time effectively. Time management will be explicitly discussed.
The other Essential Resources will address areas namely, Managing Space, Managing Equipment, Managing Drugs and Economics and Financial Management. These resources highlighted are continuously getting scarce and expensive. Nurses are among the health providers who utilize most of the medical resources, as nurses are with patients/clients for twenty-four (24) hours. Therefore, the nurse managers who control the use and storage of the resources require to be highly skilled in this area.
During seminar presentations and tutorials students will be having role plays, solving problems in simulated cases and reflecting on their practice at their work units. These activities will enable them to develop required skills in the specific areas. Assessments will include reflective writing, group presentations and case analysis.
