This course is designed to enable students to build on the fundamental principles underpinning emergency
nursing through the application of theoretical knowledge. This is then consolidated through experiential learning. Students have the opportunity to explore complex cases in clinically challenging situations. The course focuses on trauma care and trauma management and considers the patterns of injury in Fiji and the Pacific region. Trauma includes a wide spectrum of ailments, from minor injury through to severe multisystem trauma. It is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the emergency department. Through the use of epidemiological and clinical data, key problems are identified and form the basis for the learning in this unit. The unit will include major trauma, traumatic brain injury, thoracic and neck trauma, abdominal and genitourinary trauma, spinal trauma, major orthopedic and muscular trauma, blast injury and burns trauma. Learning in the unit enables the application of technical and creative knowledge using the best available evidence and high-level clinical judgement. The philosophy of person-centered care is embedded to enable excellence in holistic emergency nursing practice.
