In this annualized course, MAE students will conduct an analytical study to assess or respond to health problems or needs using quantitative and/or qualitative methods that provides the evidence-base for health actions, policies or programs. On successful completion of this course, students will elaborate the findings of the analytical study in a mini-thesis or a report of up to 10,000 words for public health professionals (i.e. it needs to meet the standards for publication in a peer reviewed journal) and other relevant stakeholders. The mini-thesis will include bbackground and rationale for study; scope and quality of the literature review, study objectives and/or hypothesis, study design, definitions and measurement of study and outcome variables, potential biases and confounders, statistical methods, descriptive and analytical statistics, interpretation of the results, study limitations, conclusions, impact or potential impacts on the health problem/challenge, implications of findings for health policies, programs, practice or for research. The report based on at least one of the three mini-theses in EPI 900, EPI901 or EPI 902 of the MAE programme, must be (a) communicated in an oral presentation at a national or international conference, and (b) prepared as an advanced draft for submission to a peer-reviewed journal.
