Molecular biology and Genetics overlaps with the disciplines of biology, chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology, microbiology and bioinformatics. The unit is designed to enable students gain an understanding of the interaction between various systems of cells, including the interrelationship of DNA, RNA and protein synthesis and how these interactions are regulated. The students should have an understanding of how genetic information controls the structure, function and development of normal and abnormal cells, and eventually the organism as a whole. The knowledge acquired from this unit and the complementing units (biochemistry, haematology, immunology and microbiology) will introduce the student to the rapid development in the field of molecular diagnostic and molecular medicine.
